Om prøverne — The requirements

Danish tests after spousal reunification

Not a government site — an independent summary of the official pages listed at the bottom.

If you live in Denmark through spousal reunification — ægtefællesammenføring — you normally have to pass two Danish tests, A1 and A2. Passing both is a condition for staying in Denmark.

Pass the A1 test within
6 months
Pass the A2 test within
9 months

What to do

  1. 1

Find your exact deadlines. They are in the letter from Udlændingestyrelsen about your residence permit. If this page says something different, go by the letter.

  2. 2

Sign up for the test on the official booking site. Each test costs DKK 3,275.40.

  3. 3

Practise. Try the full A1 test or A2 test on this site, or one part at a time from the home page.

  4. 4

Once you pass, you can ask your kommune (municipality) to lower the financial guarantee.

The details

What the tests are like

  • Both tests are oral. You do not write anything: you listen, and answer the questions out loud.
  • Everything is in Danish, and you answer in Danish.
  • Hear what they sound like: example of the A1 test and example of the A2 test (videos from Dansk og Prøver). Your own test will have different questions.

Deadlines

  • Where the 6 and 9 months count from depends on where you were when you got your permit. If you were abroad: the day your address is registered in the folkeregister in Denmark. If you were already in Denmark: the date Udlændingestyrelsen (the Danish Immigration Service) gave you the permit.
  • If you sit a test within the deadline but do not pass, you get 3 more months to pass it.
  • If you do not pass in time, you can lose your residence permit.

If you cannot sit the test in time

A deadline can be postponed if you can document that one of these stops you from sitting the test:

  • maternity or parental leave (barsel)
  • illness — your own, or your child's if they are under 18
  • an extraordinary, unforeseen transport problem

Contact Udlændingestyrelsen as soon as possible and send the documentation. Until they have decided, the deadline you were given first still applies.

Signing up and the fee

  • You sign up on the official booking site for the tests.
  • The tests are held in two places: VSKdansk in Glostrup, and Sprogcenter Vejle.
  • The fee is DKK 3,275.40 for each test you sign up for (the 2026 price).
  • There is no fee if you are an EU citizen, or if you were reunified with a Turkish citizen who lives in Denmark and is economically active.
  • To sign up you need a CPR number or a person ID. If you have neither, email danskproven@us.dk and Udlændingestyrelsen can give you a person ID.

Other tests that count

  • Some other Danish tests count instead of A1 and A2. They are listed in appendices 1 and 2 of the rules for the tests (bekendtgørelse).
  • If you have passed one of them, send proof to Udlændingestyrelsen before your deadline runs out.
  • A module test (modultest) at a Danish language school does not count. It cannot replace the A1 or the A2 test.

When you pass: the financial guarantee

With reunification, your spouse or partner in Denmark normally has to provide a financial guarantee (økonomisk sikkerhed) of DKK 61,709.34. Passing the tests lowers it:

  • by DKK 12,341.87 when you pass A1
  • by a further DKK 6,170.93 when you pass A2

These are 2026 amounts, for permits given from 1 July 2024. With an earlier permit the amounts differ — they are in the letter that asked you to provide the guarantee. You apply to have it lowered through your kommune (municipality).
